Liraglutide Weight Loss Medications

Liraglutide weight loss medication was the first GLP-1 approved for chronic weight management. Originally approved for type 2 diabetes under brand name Victoza® in 2010, it was later approved for chronic weight management in adults and children down to age 12 as Saxenda® in 2014.

In 2024, Novo Nordisk allowed the active ingredient, liraglutide, to go generic.

When added to our weight loss programs, daily self-administered doses of liraglutide weight loss medication help you lose weight by enhancing satiety, so you aren’t thinking about food all the time. Weight loss causes a drop in satisfaction hormones including glp-1. By replacing these with an injection of liraglutide weight loss treatment, your weight will stay off because you won’t have so much food noise kicking in after losing the weight!

How does liraglutide weight loss medication work?

  • Weight Loss: in clinical studies, liraglutide weight loss medication helped individuals lose an average of ~10% of their body weight, or 25 pounds, after 1 year of treatment.
  • Satiety: People taking liraglutide weight loss medication feel more satisfied before, during and after meals. They get less hungry and fill up much more quickly. People on liraglutide weight loss medication tell us that they fill up quickly at restaurants, and take home half of their meal!  Liraglutide weight loss medication mimic a hormone the body makes naturally. Natural GLP-1 is naturally released in response to eating a meal, signaling the end of the meal. With liraglutide weight loss treatment, the body is always exposed to higher levels of these hormones.
  • Behavior modification: With the appetite controlled, people on liraglutide weight loss medication are able to work with our staff to improve the quality of their nutrition and physical activity for long-term weight loss success.
