Saxenda, a new weight loss drug, receives FDA approval today

I am very excited that today the FDA approved a new weight loss drug. Saxenda works differently than the other weight loss medications. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone released by our small intestines that tells our brains it is time to stop eating. It is one of the important ways that we know to stop eating. Naturally, it is released mostly in response to eating protein and fat, and the process happens about 20 minutes after eating.

Saxenda: A new weight loss medication

This is an exciting year for weight loss medications! Hot on the heels of the FDA approval for Contrave, the FDA is expected to approve Saxenda, another novel weight loss drug soon. Saxenda (liraglutide) is an analog of GLP-1 (glucose-like peptide 1). GLP-1 is a hormone our small intestine makes in response to eating.

Contrave Now Available

Contrave will be available at pharmacies starting October 20th. It is FDA-approved for individuals with a BMI over 30, or over 27 with a weight-related health problem like high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes. It is approved for chronic use – that means it has been studied and approved for long-term weight control, similar to how we use medications for high cholesterol and for diabetes.

Contrave: An Upcoming Diet Drug

Contrave, otherwise known as NB32, is finally getting the opportunity to help individuals lose weight in the United States. The diet drug was rejected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when it was first introduced in 2011 due to lack of solid data about heart risk. However, it is getting a second chance, as it successfully went through a preliminary stage in June 2014, and is expected to gain final approval in September 2014.
